Section 232 steel tariff applies at 25%

Last updated: 2025-03-12

Commerce / White House Effective 2025-03-12

Effective 12 March 2025, a 25% Section 232 tariff applies to covered steel imports — for example flat-rolled iron and non-alloy steel under HTS heading 7208 — from all origins.

How it stacks

Section 232 is additive: it sits on top of the base MFN rate and applies regardless of country of origin (unlike Section 301, which is China-specific). For a covered steel code, the duty you owe is the MFN rate plus 25%, plus any IEEPA or reciprocal measures in force, plus the MPF and HMF fees.

What to do

Confirm whether your code is covered and see the full stack with the tariff calculator — enter the HTS code and origin to read each layer with its effective date. To understand how the layers combine, read tariff stacking explained.
