How to check Section 232 coverage

  1. Enter the HTS code. Use the 10-digit US HTS code. Section 232 coverage keys on the tariff chapter — 72–73 for steel, 76 for aluminum — plus listed derivatives.
  2. Pick the country of origin. Section 232 is largely origin-agnostic, but origin still matters for the rest of the stack and any country agreement.
  3. Read the verdict. You get covered (with the rate), not covered, or in-scope-confirm, plus the cite. If it applies, jump to the calculator for the full stacked duty.

About Section 232

Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 lets the President restrict imports that threaten national security. The standing Section 232 actions cover steel (HTS chapters 72–73) and aluminum (chapter 76) articles — currently 25% — and have been extended to a growing list of downstream "derivative" products in other chapters (for example certain fasteners and fabricated parts). Because it is product-based, Section 232 generally applies regardless of where the steel or aluminum was made, and it stacks on top of the base duty and any Section 301, IEEPA or reciprocal tariff — see how tariff stacking works. For the combined number, run the tariff calculator; coverage is defined in the Section 232 proclamations and product annex.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Section 232 tariff?
Section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962 lets the President impose tariffs on imports that threaten national security. In practice "Section 232" means the tariffs on steel (HTS chapters 72–73) and aluminum (chapter 76) articles and their listed derivative products.
How much is the Section 232 tariff?

Does Section 232 depend on the country of origin?
Largely no — Section 232 is a product-based tariff that generally applies regardless of origin, though some countries have had quotas or agreements over time. The decisive factor is whether the HTS code is a covered steel or aluminum article.
Does Section 232 stack with other tariffs?
Yes. Section 232 is additive on top of the base/MFN duty and stacks with Section 301, IEEPA, the reciprocal baseline and any AD/CVD. Use the tariff calculator to see the full combined rate.
